Wie ben ik? Who am I?

Ik ben Philip Van Oekel, geboren op 18 maart 1957 in Ekeren. Met een Bachelor of Business ging ik al jong de zelfstandige weg op — eerst in de familiezaak, daarna met iets wat me al vroeg fascineerde: computers. I'm Philip Van Oekel, born on 18 March 1957 in Ekeren, Belgium. With a Bachelor of Business I went the self-employed route early — first in the family business, then into what had fascinated me from the start: computers.

In 1990 richtte ik Microman op, een computerwinkelketen die uitgroeide tot vijf vestigingen in Vlaanderen — van Aartselaar tot Gent-Eke, Roeselare, Turnhout en Hasselt. We verkochten en bouwden pc's (onder meer onder ons huismerk Protaq), hielpen KMO's met advies en support, en groeiden uit tot een van de grotere system builders van het land. Rond de eeuwwisseling trok ik zelfs een jaar met een mobilhome de wereld rond, op zoek naar nieuwe technologie voor onze klanten — een avontuur waar de Belgische pers toen graag over schreef. In 1990 I founded Microman, a computer retail chain that grew to five shops across Flanders — from Aartselaar to Gent-Eke, Roeselare, Turnhout and Hasselt. We sold and built PCs (including under our house brand Protaq), helped SMEs with advice and support, and became one of the larger system builders in the country. Around the turn of the millennium I even spent a year travelling the world in a motorhome, hunting for new technology for our customers — an adventure the Belgian press covered with enthusiasm.

Vandaag woon ik in Moraira (Costa Blanca, Spanje). Ik blijf graag bezig: motoren, fietsen, Windows-pc's — als iets kapot is of beter kan, wil ik het zelf begrijpen. Met Good to know deel ik die nieuwsgierigheid: duidelijke, nuttige tech-kennis, zonder hype. Wat ik ooit in de winkel uitlegde aan klanten, schrijf ik nu graag voor jou. Today I live in Moraira on Spain's Costa Blanca. I still like to keep my hands busy: engines, bikes, Windows PCs — if something's broken or can work better, I want to understand it myself. With Good to know I share that curiosity: clear, useful tech knowledge, without the hype. What I once explained to customers in the shop, I'm happy to write for you now.
