Wie YouTube op een telefoon zonder advertenties wil bekijken, komt vroeg of laat bij ReVanced uit: een aangepaste app die je zelf moet bouwen en die na elke YouTube-update opnieuw gepatcht wil worden. De advertenties van Google zijn nu weg, maar de "deze video wordt je aangeboden door..." van de youtuber zelf niet. Die zit in de video ingebakken. SponsorBlock lost dat op met een door de community aangelegde database van tijdstempels: sponsorsegmenten, intro's, outro's en abonneer-oproepen worden automatisch overgeslagen. Google's ads are gone, but the creator's own "this video is brought to you by..." is not: that segment is baked into the video. SponsorBlock fixes it with a crowdsourced database of timestamps, automatically skipping sponsorships, intros, outros and subscribe reminders.

Vind je een maker goed, overweeg dan een lidmaatschap, een tip, of gewoon eens zijn of haar video's volledig uitkijken. Installing an ad blocker is allowed; you decide what your own browser renders. But be honest about the flip side: ad revenue is the main income for many channels. If you value a creator, consider a membership, a tip, or simply watching their videos all the way through.

Verwacht ook geen eeuwige rust. YouTube experimenteert regelmatig met detectie van blokkeerders: vertraagde video's, waarschuwingsvensters, een speler die weigert te starten. In de praktijk lost het uBlock-filterteam dat binnen enkele dagen op. Loopt het even mis, laat de extensies dan automatisch bijwerken, verwijder je YouTube-cookies en herlaad de pagina. Do not expect permanent silence either. YouTube regularly experiments with blocker detection: throttled playback, warning dialogs, a player that refuses to start. In practice the uBlock filter team patches around it within days. If something breaks, keep extensions on auto-update, clear your YouTube cookies and reload the page.
