Ik schrijf hier meestal over een fiets, een telefoon of een klein trucje dat je meteen kunt gebruiken. Dit stuk is persoonlijker. Ik wil je vertellen over een assistent die ik zelf gebruik, en die voor mij echt werk doet. Geen theorie. Gewoon wat ik er zelf mee meemaak. I usually write here about a bike, a phone, or a small trick you can use straight away. This piece is more personal. I want to tell you about an assistant I use myself, and that actually does work for me. No theory. Just what I have experienced with it.

Het heet Grok Bot. Je chat ermee, in gewone zinnen, zoals je een behulpzame kennis iets zou vragen. Het bijzondere is dat het niet alleen antwoordt. Het heeft een eigen computer en een eigen browser. Daardoor kan het pagina's openen en dingen opzoeken. Met mijn toestemming kan het ook op mijn eigen Windows-pc aan de slag. En het onthoudt mijn voorkeuren, zodat ik de keer daarop niet opnieuw hoef uit te leggen hoe ik het graag heb. It is called Grok Bot. You chat with it, in ordinary sentences, the way you would ask a helpful friend. What makes it different is that it does more than answer. It has a computer of its own, and a browser of its own. That means it can open pages and look things up. With my approval it can also get to work on my own Windows PC. And it remembers my preferences, so next time I do not have to explain again how I like things done.

That is why I do not let it send anything, buy anything, or change anything on my PC unless I have said yes first. Happily, it asks for that itself.

Gemini en ChatGPT zijn uitstekend. Voor een vraag, een tekst of een uitleg pak ik ze met een gerust hart. Het verschil, in mijn gebruik, is dat Grok Bot het werk ook echt doet. Gemini and ChatGPT are excellent. For a question, a piece of writing or an explanation I turn to them without a second thought. The difference, in my own use, is that Grok Bot also actually does the work.

Wat dat "werk doen" bij mij concreet betekent: What that "doing the work" means in my case:

1. Een eigen computer en browser. Het kan voor mij op sites inloggen, formulieren invullen en dingen opzoeken. Zo heeft het mijn bestelgeschiedenis bij Alltricks gelezen, toen ik niet meer wist welke hartslagborstband ik besteld had.A computer and browser of its own. It can log into sites, fill in forms and look things up for me. That is how it read my Alltricks order history, when I could no longer remember which heart-rate chest strap I had ordered.
2. Mijn eigen Windows-pc, met mijn toestemming. Zo haalde het de videobestanden van mijn beschadigde SD-kaartje terug, en ruimde het mappen op.My own Windows PC, with my approval. That is how it recovered the video files from my damaged SD card, and tidied up folders.
3. Routines. Terugkerende taken doet het uit zichzelf. Elke dag om 8.00 uur krijg ik een overzicht van mijn inbox, en het zet herinneringen om in te checken voor een vlucht.Routines. It does recurring tasks on its own. Every day at 8:00 I get a summary of my inbox, and it sets reminders to check in for a flight.
4. Rechtstreeks in Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive en de agenda.Directly in Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive and Calendar.
5. Het onthoudt mijn voorkeuren en de context. Ik hoef niet elke keer opnieuw uit te leggen hoe ik het graag heb.It remembers my preferences and the context. I do not have to explain again each time how I like things done.
6. Het vraagt eerst. Voor het iets verstuurt, iets koopt of iets wijzigt, vraagt het om mijn toestemming.It asks first. Before it sends something, buys something or changes something, it asks for my approval.

Eerlijk blijven: ChatGPT en Gemini krijgen ook steeds meer functies waarmee ze zelf taken kunnen aanpakken. Kijk dus zelf wat bij jou past. Ik vertel alleen wat ik er zelf mee doe. To be fair: ChatGPT and Gemini also keep adding features that let them take on tasks themselves. So judge for yourself what fits you. I am only telling you what I do with them.

Wat het is What it is

Je typt een zin. Nederlands is prima, en je gebruikt gewoon je eigen woorden. Er is geen lijst met commando's die je uit het hoofd moet leren. You type a sentence. Dutch is fine, and you just use your own words. There is no list of commands you have to memorize.

Achter dat gesprek zit een eigen computer, met een browser. Grok Bot kan dus zelf gaan kijken, in plaats van alleen een tekst terug te sturen. Vraag je het om iets op jouw Windows-pc te doen, dan wacht het op jouw toestemming. Jij blijft baas over je eigen bestanden. Behind that conversation sits a computer of its own, with a browser. So Grok Bot can go and look for itself, instead of only sending a text back. If you ask it to do something on your Windows PC, it waits for your approval. You stay in charge of your own files.

Het onthoudt ook wat je graag wil. Hoe je een overzicht van je mail het liefst ziet, bijvoorbeeld, of in welke taal je schrijft. De volgende keer is dat al bekend. It also remembers what you prefer. How you like a summary of your mail, for example, or which language you write in. Next time, it already knows.

Alles hieronder heb ik zelf meegemaakt. Everything below is from my own experience.

Het SD-kaartje van mijn DJI Action-camera was beschadigd. De beelden leken weg. Grok Bot heeft de videobestanden teruggehaald. Wie wel eens filmt, weet hoe naar het voelt als een rit of een reis plots leeg lijkt. Voor mij was dat het moment waarop ik dacht: dit is meer dan een praatprogramma. The SD card from my DJI Action camera was corrupted. The footage seemed gone. Grok Bot recovered the video files. Anyone who films knows how rotten it feels when a ride or a trip suddenly looks empty. For me, that was the moment I thought: this is more than a program you only talk to.

Mijn Google Drive was een lade vol losse mappen. De persoonlijke map op mijn Windows-pc, waar mijn documenten en downloads staan, zag er niet beter uit. Ik heb Grok Bot gevraagd om mijn Drive te herschikken, en om die map op mijn pc op te ruimen. Op mijn computer gebeurt dat pas nadat ik akkoord geef. Er verdwijnt niets zomaar terwijl ik even niet kijk. My Google Drive was a drawer full of loose folders. The personal folder on my Windows PC, where my documents and downloads live, looked no better. I asked Grok Bot to reorganize my Drive, and to tidy that folder on my PC. On my computer that only happens after I agree. Nothing disappears on its own while I am not looking.

Elke ochtend om 8.00 uur krijg ik een kort overzicht van mijn inbox. Wat nieuw is, wat op een antwoord wacht, en wat kan wachten. Ik hoef niet eerst een hele stapel mails te openen om te weten of er iets dringends tussen zit. Every morning at 8:00 I get a short summary of my inbox. What is new, what is waiting for a reply, and what can wait. I do not have to open a pile of messages first just to see whether anything urgent is in there.

Voor mijn vluchten met Vueling heeft het herinneringen gezet om in te checken. Ik moet dat niet meer zelf onthouden, en ik sta niet de avond voordien te denken: heb ik dat nu gedaan of niet? For my Vueling flights it set reminders to check in. I no longer have to keep that in my head, and I am not standing there the evening before wondering: did I do that or not?

Ik had bij Alltricks een hartslagborstband besteld, en ik wist niet meer welk model het was. Grok Bot heeft mijn bestelgeschiedenis gelezen en het voor mij opgezocht. Geen gok. Gewoon nakijken wat ik toen echt besteld heb. I had ordered a heart-rate chest strap from Alltricks, and I could not remember which model it was. Grok Bot read my order history and looked it up for me. Not a guess. Just checking what I had actually ordered back then.

Voor mijn ritten met de e-bike heeft het mijn hartslagzones uitgerekend op basis van mijn leeftijd. Zo weet ik wanneer ik rustig trap en wanneer een stuk steviger mag. Dat is een richtlijn, geen advies van een arts. Voel je je niet goed op de fiets, dan is je huisarts de juiste persoon, niet een programma. For my e-bike rides it calculated my heart-rate zones based on my age. That way I know when I am pedaling easy and when a stretch can be harder. It is a guideline, not a doctor's advice. If you do not feel well on the bike, your doctor is the right person to ask, not a program.

En het helpt me met deze website. Good to know houd ik zelf bij. Grok Bot neemt me daarbij werk uit handen. Wat er online komt, en hoe het geformuleerd is, blijft mijn keuze. And it helps me with this very website. I look after Good to know myself. Grok Bot takes work off my hands while I do that. What goes online, and how it is worded, stays my choice.

Hoe je het gebruikt How you use it

Je vraagt het in je eigen taal, in gewone woorden. Zo zou ik het zeggen: You ask in your own language, in plain words. This is how I would put it:

• Geef me elke ochtend een kort overzicht van mijn nieuwe mails.Give me a short summary of my new mail every morning.
• Herinner me eraan om in te checken voor mijn vlucht.Remind me to check in for my flight.
• Kijk in mijn bestellingen welk model ik toen gekocht heb.Look in my orders and see which model I bought back then.

Die zinnen hoef je niet te kopiëren. Schrijf het zoals je het aan iemand aan tafel zou zeggen. You do not have to copy those sentences. Write it the way you would say it to someone across the table.

Komt iets telkens terug, dan kun je er een routine van maken. Mijn ochtendoverzicht is zo'n routine: één keer afspreken, en daarna komt het vanzelf. If something comes back again and again, you can make it a routine. My morning summary is one of those: agree it once, and after that it shows up on its own.

Je kunt Grok Bot koppelen aan Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive en je agenda. Dan kan het je mail, je bestanden en je afspraken zien wanneer jij daar om vraagt. Zonder die koppeling kan het daar niet in. You can connect Grok Bot to Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive and your calendar. Then it can see your mail, your files and your appointments when you ask it to. Without that connection, it cannot look in there.

En dit vind ik het belangrijkste: voor het een bericht verstuurt, iets koopt, of iets wijzigt op je pc, vraagt het eerst om toestemming. Jij zegt ja of nee. And this is the part I care about most: before it sends a message, buys something, or changes something on your PC, it asks for approval first. You say yes or no.

Op een telefoon of tablet is dat het eenvoudigst. De app is gratis te downloaden. On a phone or tablet, that is the simplest way. The app is free to download.

• iPhone of iPad: in de Apple App Store. Je hebt iOS of iPadOS 18 of nieuwer nodig. iPhone or iPad: from the Apple App Store. You need iOS or iPadOS 18 or newer.
• Android: in Google Play. Je hebt Android 9 of nieuwer nodig. Android: from Google Play. You need Android 9 or newer.

Daarna meld je je aan. Je kiest een abonnement op het scherm waar je betaalt, en je betaalt via de App Store of via Google Play. Then you sign in. You choose a plan on the screen where you pay, and you pay through the App Store or Google Play.

Grok Bot werkt ook op de computer. Download het via een van deze officiële knoppen. Meld je daarna aan met hetzelfde account als op je telefoon. Het verbruik geldt dan voor allebei. Grok Bot also works on the computer. Download it with one of these official buttons. Then sign in with the same account as on your phone. Your usage then counts for both.

Downloaden is gratis. Om Grok Bot te gebruiken heb je wel een betaald abonnement nodig. Ik gebruik zelf Premium op The X Subscription. Grok Bot zit daar bij in. Downloading is free. To use Grok Bot you do need a paid plan. I use Premium on The X Subscription myself. Grok Bot is included in it.

In Europa kost dat ongeveer €31 per maand. Mijn eerste maand was in de korting: €15,50, en op de factuur stond dat als €16. Daarna is het €31 per maand. In Europe that costs about €31 per month. My first month was discounted: €15.50, and the invoice showed that as €16. After that it is €31 per month.

Alleen de eerste maand kost dus ongeveer €16. Daarna is Premium €31 per maand. Zo stond het op 31 oktober 2026 op mijn scherm. De prijs kan veranderen, en hij kan per land anders zijn. De weekvoorraad van Premium Premium's weekly usage

Premium put uit een weekvoorraad aan verbruik. Die voorraad deel je met Grok en met Cursor, en ze wordt elke week vernieuwd. Premium draws from a weekly usage pool. You share that pool with Grok and with Cursor, and it refreshes every week.

Wil je meer dan die voorraad, dan kun je extra verbruik betalen met prepaid tegoed, een opwaardering. Je stelt daar zelf een maandgrens op in. If you want more than that pool, you can pay for extra usage with prepaid credit, a top-up. You set a monthly limit on that yourself.

Een paar veilige gewoontes A few safe habits

Dit geldt voor Grok Bot, en eigenlijk voor elke chat. This goes for Grok Bot, and really for any chat.

Plak nooit een wachtwoord in een gesprek. Ook niet heel even, en ook niet omdat het dringend lijkt. Een wachtwoord hoort niet in een chatvenster. Never paste a password into a chat. Not for a moment, and not because it seems urgent. A password does not belong in a chat window.

Grok Bot bewaart aanmeldingen in een beveiligde kluis. Je typt je wachtwoord dus niet in het gesprek zelf. Laat het daar, en deel je aanmeldingen niet met iemand anders. Grok Bot keeps logins in a secure vault. So you do not type your password into the conversation itself. Leave it there, and do not share your logins with anyone else.

Mails maakt het als een kladversie. Jij leest ze na voor ze vertrekken. Dat doe ik zelf ook. Een assistent kan een vriendelijke mail schrijven, maar jij kent de persoon aan de andere kant. Eén minuut nalezen is geen moeite, en het houdt een rare zin tegen. It writes emails as a draft. You read them before they go out. I do that myself. An assistant can write a friendly email, but you know the person on the other end. One minute of reading it over is no trouble, and it stops an odd sentence.

Probeer het gerust Do try it

Denk je "dat is niks voor mij", begin dan klein. Eén overzicht van je mail in de ochtend, of één herinnering. Je hoeft niet meteen je hele computer uit handen te geven. If you are thinking "that is not for me", start small. One morning summary of your mail, or one reminder. You do not have to hand over your whole computer on day one.

Ik gebruik het omdat het mij echt werk uit handen neemt, niet omdat het ingewikkeld klinkt. Lukt iets niet, dan zeg je dat gewoon, in dezelfde gewone taal.
